FDM 3D Printer (Self-Build)

fdm marlin electronics mechanical-design maker

Overview

Built a working FDM printer from the ground up — not a kit, but designed and sourced independently. This project was the foundation for all later hardware prototyping work.

What Was Built

  • Frame: Designed and assembled the mechanical structure from aluminium extrusions and 3D-printed brackets
  • Motion system: Configured stepper motors, belts, leadscrews, and limit switches
  • Electronics: Wired a RAMPS 1.4 controller board with stepper drivers, heated bed, and hotend
  • Firmware: Compiled and configured Marlin firmware — steps/mm, PID tuning, bed levelling
  • Calibration: Full dimensional calibration for accurate print dimensions

Outcome

A reliable printer that has since produced components for every subsequent hardware project, including the prosthetic gripper, bionic arm, and chassis parts.
