Economic Bionic Arm Prosthesis
arduino c++ emg servo fdm 3d-printing embedded team-lead
Overview
Capstone project at University of Mumbai. The goal was a functional, low-cost bionic arm using off-the-shelf components and FDM printing — making prosthetic technology more accessible.
My Role
Team lead for a 5-person group. I owned the embedded system architecture, EMG signal processing pipeline, and servo control, while coordinating mechanical and structural work across the team.
System Design
- Sensing: Surface EMG electrodes detect muscle contractions; signals are amplified and filtered before ADC sampling
- MCU: Arduino-based embedded design for real-time signal processing and servo control
- Actuation: Multiple servo motors drive finger tendons for different grip patterns
- Structure: All arm and finger components FDM printed — designed for easy reprinting and replacement
Outcome
Successfully demonstrated three grip patterns (power grip, pinch, open hand) controlled by EMG gestures at university presentation.
